Grades: 1-8

As its motto indicates, the focus of Charleston Day School is scholarship and integrity. Its location in the center of Charleston’s historic district affords easy access to the many cultural and educational facilities of the city. Although students used to be drawn almost exclusively from the peninsula, over half of our 185 students now come from the suburbs to benefit from this unique opportunity. The Day School, as it is affectionately known, offers a challenging educational experience. The student/faculty ratio is 9:1, and in grades 5 - 8, a portion of the core curriculum is structured to allow classes of no more than twelve students. The facilities include a library of over 10,000 volumes; a science laboratory; art, music, French, and math classrooms; a fully equipped computer lab; and a full-sized gymnasium. A Middle School building gives adolescents the space and independence to grow intellectually and emotionally. Seventh graders publish the school newspaper, and the eighth grade produces an impressive yearbook.

In addition to the strong emphasis on core subjects such as math and English, students in all grades study science, geography, history, French, computer technology, art, music, and physical education. The Day School begins a rigorous reading and writing program in the fourth grade, and all students have required summer reading. Those students who study the French language for eight years earn high school credit for French I and culminate their experience with a week-long trip to France. Latin is offered in grades 7 and 8 for those who wish to pursue a classical language. All eighth graders are required to study Algebra I. A course in ethics is taught in grades 3 through 5, and a Wellness program is offered in the Middle School. Because technology is fully integrated into the curriculum at all levels through the use of laptop computer, each student must have his/her own computer by the fourth grade.

Charleston Day School recognizes the value of nurturing the whole child. Included in the comprehensive activities program for all grade levels are interscholastic and intramural athletics, cultural development in the arts, and natural and civic history through frequent on-campus presentations and field trips. In addition, each class participates in at least one annual community outreach project to instill a sense of service. Afternoon care and various enrichment programs are available, as is a hot lunch program.

Graduates matriculate to area high schools as well as a variety of preparatory schools around the country.
