Charles Towne Montessori School was established in 1972
and is the oldest Montessori School in Charleston. It is
accredited by the American Montessori Society.
The school is designed to teach children from toddling
age to the age of fourteen. The day is very different in each
level, and each has its own environment with specially
designed materials used to give the child instruction through
all the learning pathways. The teachers are experienced and
certified in Montessori practices and work with the
Academic Directress who has been trained and active in
Montessori teaching for thirty years on all levels.
The classes are composed of toddlers up to age three,
Primary for children ages three to six, Lower Elementary
for children ages six to nine and Upper Elementary for
children ages nine to fourteen.
In each level the classes allow the child to determine his/
her interest and direct him/herself. Each material has a direct
aim as well as one or more indirect aims, such as the famous
and much emulated sandpaper letters that teach the child a
sound, but also help him/her to form letters when the child
begins to write.
CTMS alumni have gone to all the high schools in the
area, and many of them are outstanding scholars.
The school offers an extended day program from 7:00
a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; an academic summer program, music;
language and physical education programs; and studio
programs that include ballet, karate, gymnastics, ceramics,
and art.
Students of every race, creed, and nationality are
encouraged to apply.
