Porter-Gaud School is an independent, college
preparatory school with an historical tie to the Episcopal
Church. Founded in 1867, it is a co-educational day school
with an approximate enrollment of 870 students in grades
K-12. The faculty is composed of 73 full-time teachers, 85%
of whom hold masters degrees or higher. Class sizes range
from 5 to 22. SAT averages for the class of 2002 are 635
verbal and 641 math. All Porter-Gaud graduates go on to
four year colleges. In addition to providing a strong, college
preparatory curriculum, Porter-Gaud offers a wide variety
of extra curricular activities. Porter-Gaud students publish
a bimonthly newspaper, a quarterly literary magazine and a
comprehensive annual. They participate in eight distinct
choral groups, a drama club, a debate team and numerous
interest clubs. Sports include football, girls and boys soccer,
basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, track, tennis, crosscountry
and golf. Over 70% of the upper school student
body participates in Community Outreach programs
encompassing tutoring at an inner-city school, hospital
volunteering, food and toy drives, peer counseling, Beach
Sweep and Adopt-a-Highway.
In addition to three computer labs, every classroom at
Porter-Gaud has Ethernet connections, a computer with multimedia capability, and a color
television for computer presentations. Every computer is
connected to the Internet via a T1 line. A Science,
Information and Technology Center and an Athletic Center
which includes a 1,000 seat gymnasium were completed in
August 1999. Located on campus are a football stadium, a
1/4 mile track, a baseball field, a softball field, and two soccer
fields.
The Lower School is divided into primary (K-2) and
elementary (3-5) grades. Spanish is introduced into the
curriculum at the 2nd grade. Art, music, physical education
and computer are important parts of the program for all
Lower School students. In addition, the school offers an
Extended Day program providing quality after-school
supervision for students in grades 1-6.
Yearly tuition and fees range from $11,765 to $15,350
depending on grade and curriculum. The admissions policy
is totally non-discriminatory. Admissions testing for all
prospective students is conducted in late winter and spring.
